Blue Angels 2023 Practice Session | Corpus Christi Photography
Corpus Christi is gearing up for Buc Days 2023, and along with the Buc Days rodeo, carnival, and parades, the Blue Angels will be returning to perform their Wings Over South Texas show on Saturday May 6th and Sunday May 7th at noon (weather permitting.) I was heading from downtown Corpus Christi out to Padre Island for some short-term rental photography, and was hit with the deafening sound of F/A 18 Super Hornets making 90-degree turns above Corpus Christi bay. Luckily since it’s bird season, I’ve been keeping my Canon 400/2.8L estate sale find in the car with me and decided that even a practice run for the Blue Angel pilots was worth taking a few snaps.
That being said, I also have rented Canon’s R7 mirrorless body to give it a try, and out of the few hundred shots I hammered off in 20 minutes, I don’t think the R7 missed focus on any (absolutely amazing compared to my Canon 7Dii body that’s really showing its age.)
If you’re thinking about going to this weekend’s shows, remember that the seawall along Shoreline will be packed with parade viewers staking out their spots. Last time the Blue Angels came to town, we had a great view from Oleander Point along Ocean Drive. If you have little ones, go pick up some ear muffs because these jets are LOUD.
I did my best with these shots and the strong haze we had around lunchtime today, enjoy!
