Food Photography | Virginia’s on the Bay

Virginia’s on the Bay is one of Port Aransas’s anchor restaurants where you set your watch to island time, grab some delicious seafood, and enjoy a drink while watching the goings-on around the marina. Unbeknownst to me, some long-time friends from my Bayfest days had purchased the restaurant and were looking for some updated food photography to showcase some of their most popular dishes.

As my friend Gerald Flores (Taco Gear | Tuxedo Goose Films) and I were headed out, the skies looked unforgiving: overcast, slightly foggy conditions worsened the nearer we got. I would be shooting outside on one of Virginia’s dining decks, so as long as we didn’t have rain droplets coming down, I was excited for the soft light the water-logged skies would provide.

When we got there I searched for a perfect tabletop as our base - unfortunately many of the tabletops were too reflective and, ultimately, bland. I noticed the tops were not all attached to the table legs and we flipped one over and found the perfect combination of some tarnished copper and green oxidation. I got one additional light set up to supplement our gorgeous overcast skies (and help provide a little direction to the shadows). The kitchen began firing orders and I got into a groove shooting a dozen or so plates before we were done.

Food photography puts me in a trance. I feel like it takes me forever to find the basics I need: background, light, & angles. Once I find the base elements and start taking photos I feel like only a few minutes pass and then we’ve shot everything.

Whether you own a restaurant in Port Aransas, Corpus Christi, Rockport, Kingsville, Padre Island, Mathis, or Alice, food photography can help showcase your plates to customers. My food photography gives you the base materials for your marketing content - print ads, social media posts, social media ads, and more can be created using your library of assets. Food photography is also more affordable than you might think. Send me a message to learn more about how food & beverage photography can benefit your restaurant or bar.
