Editorial Photography | The Bend Magazine - Roger Creager Cover Feature

Back in early 2014, I had recently met one of the people behind a very new local magazine that was making the rounds called, The Bend. Kaley had been in the wedding planning circuit and wanted to get some more information regarding my wedding photography pricing and style, and had casually mentioned that Jordan (her husband) and herself were working on starting a new lifestyle magazine focused on the Corpus Christi coastal bend. I explained my photography experience (I had only been working full-time for four years at that time) and let her know that I’d be happy to help out with their new venture if needed.

A few months went by when I received a call about my availability to photograph a person of interest for their June 2014 issue. Apparently, the photographer originally lined up had an emergency, this person of interest would only be in town for a few hours, and their location wasn’t going to be available. At the time, I was helping out in our family barbecue restaurant in downtown Corpus Christi, Hoegemeyer’s Barbeque, and I also happened to keep my gear at the restaurant because it was centrally located. I got a little more information about what they were looking for and found out that the person of interest was Texas Country music artist Roger Creager and his father.

I threw out the suggestion that we could shoot the two of them at our barbecue place - “What’s closer to Texas Country than Texas barbecue” is how I think I reasoned my idea. At this point, anything was better than nothing, so they redirected Roger and his father to our place, and we got a decent selection of casual shots, a few candid and a few posed. My favorites were the shots in front of the Texas flag painted on the garage. Next thing I know, a few weeks later I’m seeing my impromptu photo gracing the third cover of the locally loved magazine, The Bend.

For this editorial photography assignment, I was working lightweight even though I had my entire kit available to use. Yongnuo speedlights (2) were used with a 30” shoot-through umbrella for all the shots, triggered wirelessly from my Canon 6D with 35/1.4L
