Food Photography | The Lookout at Bluff’s Landing

In late summer, Clara with The Lookout at Bluff’s Landing contacted me to schedule a time to come see everything they had improved at Bluff’s Landing Marina way out Laguna Shores in Flour Bluff. It had been years since I had been out that way, and even longer since I had photographed anything in the area. She showed me around their main office, hotel, and their restaurant; we discussed photography needs for their hotel and the menu at The Lookout (their restaurant overlooking the marina and Laguna Madre.)

We scheduled an afternoon a few weeks later for one of their prep days when the restaurant would be closed, but the chef and staff would be there to prepare the menu items they were interested in photographing. I brought along my entire food photography kit (including the Canon 6Dii and 100/2.8L) but decided to utilize my Angler 88 instead of the 42” brella box I would typically shoot with. I wanted these plates to have a little softer light than normal to reflect the natural light that gently makes its way into their dining room. Once I got my equipment set up (one for the bar to shoot cocktails and another for the food) both the bartender and chef began a steady stream of food and drinks. We ended up photographing their entire selection in a little under 2 hours of time.
