Event Photography | Inaugural Downtown Corpus Christi “Music Walk”
In September 2023, I had the opportunity to photograph Corpus Christi’s inaugural "Music Walk," an event celebrating the city's new designation as a Music Friendly Texas community. The Music Walk coincided with a downtown press release block party, adding even more excitement to the already bustling Artwalk. With multiple stages and performances happening simultaneously across 8-10 city blocks, the event provided a unique challenge, both technically and logistically.
One of the biggest hurdles was managing the changing light throughout the evening. The event kicked off in the late afternoon, and I had to quickly adapt my approach as the light shifted from golden hour to twilight and into the night. This meant constantly adjusting my camera settings to maintain consistent exposure and ensure that every photo—from the lively daytime performances to the electric evening crowds—was crisp and dynamic.
Another challenge was the sheer size of the event. Covering such a large area in real time required careful planning. With four hours of photography ahead of me and multiple stages to capture, I had to pack efficiently, bringing only the essential gear that could fit into my backpack. Every shot needed to be deliberate, as I moved quickly from one stage to the next, documenting the energy of both performers and attendees.
Despite these challenges, the event was a vibrant celebration of Corpus Christi's musical spirit. From local bands playing on different stages to attendees dancing in the streets, the photos captured the lively atmosphere that comes with a city-wide celebration. There was a great sense of pride in the air, as the Music Friendly Texas designation was a significant recognition of the city’s commitment to fostering a thriving music community.
One of the most pressing aspects of this project was the turnaround time for the images. Because of the media coverage and marketing requirements, the photos needed to be edited and delivered by the next day. With careful planning and a streamlined editing process, I was able to provide a collection of images that were ready for immediate use, highlighting the event’s energy and importance.
This project was a rewarding challenge, showcasing not just the cultural heartbeat of Corpus Christi but also my ability to adapt to varying conditions and deliver high-quality images under tight deadlines. It was a celebration of community, music, and the growing artistic presence in the city—a true honor to capture.
